Naravane takes over as chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee

chief Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane today took over as the chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee as a stopgap arrangement to fill up the post that fell vacant with the tragic demise of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Bipin Rawat. The chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee, which comprises all three service chiefs, used to be the senior-most post before the creation of the rank of CDS two years ago.

India’s first CDS Gen Bipin Rawat died in an Indian Air Force Mi-17 V5 helicopter crash in District Coonoor of Tamil Nadu on 8 December, along with his wife and 11 personnel.

Gen Naravane has been given the charge as the chairman of the committee as he is the senior-most among the three service chiefs, sources said.

IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal and Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar had taken over their respective positions on 30 September and 30 November.

The chiefs of staff committee met two days ago and condoled the death of Gen Rawat and others who died in the Coonoor chopper crash. Group Captain Varun Singh, who was the lone survivor of the accident, succumbed to injuries yesterday at a military hospital in Bengaluru.

The chopper crashed when Gen Rawat was on his way to Defence Services Staff College in Wellington to deliver a lecture. Investigations into the incident are being conducted by all the three services.
