A Hindu man died and his Hindu friend was injured after a bunch of eight Muslim antisocial elements in south Delhi’s Sangam Vihar attacked them brutally. Police have arrested one of the accused. A case was earlier registered on 21 December.
“Jatin along with his friend was returning to Sangam Vihar on Monday (between 2 AM and 3 AM). A group of people were passing from the same street. Suddenly, the group started attacking the duo with fists and stones,” an officer said.
The Hindu men were dragged on the street and left abandoned in a drain. Relatives of the victims later carried them to a hospital. Rs 3,000 was missing from the pocket of one of the victims.
“Jatin succumbed to his injuries and Pankaj was discharged after treatment,” an officer said, adding that they suspect robbery as the reason behind the incident, however, a probe was still going on.
A CCTV camera installed near the site captured the crime. The CCTV video shows the eight suspects brutally beating the two victims as Jatin (age yet to be ascertained) and Pankaj Kumar, 21. The video shows the two victims were punched, kicked and beaten with pieces of concrete lying by the roadside.
Before leaving the spot, the assailants threw the two victims in a roadside drain, the video shows.
“Both the injured men were admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre. One of them, identified as Jatin, succumbed to his injuries on 22 December. Pankaj was discharged after medical attention. Since one of the victims died, we have added Section 302 (murder) in the first information report (FIR).
Two suspected attackers were apprehended. One of them was identified as Ramzan Ali. The age of the other suspect is being ascertained. Efforts are on to arrest the absconding attackers,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Delhi) Harsha Vardhan Mandava.
Pankaj told the police that they were attacked when they returning home after attending the birthday party of their friend’s brother in Sangam Vihar.
