Mumbai: Plane skids off runway; flights diverted, cancelled

SpiceJet flight SG 6237 from Jaipur to Mumbai, after making a landing, slipped away from the main runway of the airport; no casualty has been reported

Mumbai: Continuous rain has rendered the runways of Mumbai airport unusable. Yesterday, the tyres of a SpiceJet plane skidded on a runway. After the incident, the main runway of the airport has been closed.

A total of 52 flights have been cancelled while 55 have been diverted, according to sources.

Mumbai has been witnessing heavy rains for the last four days, which affected the city’s routine. Trains, flights and bus services have been affected due to the torrential rains here.

The SpiceJet incident happened around midnight. The SG 6237 from Jaipur, after making a landing, slipped away from the main runway of the Mumbai airport due to the torrential rains that had started in the city on Monday. There was, fortunately, no casualty, according to officials, although such a slip causes a major jerk, hurling the upper part of the torsos of passengers, hitting their heads against the front seats or other passengers. Following the accident, the main runway of Mumbai airport was closed.

Due to the incident, many flights have been diverted to Ahmedabad and Bengaluru.

At present, the aircraft that are still in operation are using the secondary runway of the airport.

Korean KE655, which was coming from Seoul, has been diverted to Ahmedabad while the aircraft LH756 and AE331 had to turn to other airports.

On June 30, SpiceJet from Bhopal veered off the runway at airport due to heavy rainfall and wind.

The Boeing 737-800 aircraft is still stuck on the runway (09×27) and operations are being carried out from the secondary runway ( 14×32), the official said.

“Efforts are underway to remove the aircraft from main runway to bay area,” the official said, adding that it may take time to restore operations from the main runway as the continuous rain is hampering the aircraft rescue work.

Earlier, several local train services, considered the lifeline of Mumbai, had been cancelled or short-terminated as a temporary bamboo structure erected for civil work fell on an overhead wire near the Marine Lines station on the Western line, an official said.

There is practically no country with 20%-90% Muslim population it’s either below 20 or above 90%.
Reason: once 20%, non Muslims population tends to convert to Islam!
