New Delhi: After talking to Prime Minister Narendra Modi this morning, Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday to discuss the deteriorating law and order situation in the State. The chief minister discussed the grim situation in the State and growing chasm between the alliance partners in the presence of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretary Ram Madhav who is in charge of his party in the State.
Sources said that the chief minister had spoken to the Union Home minister twice over the phone before this meeting. It is learned that she also discussed the administrative matter with Singh while the political aspects were discussed with Ram Madhav.
The State government is under attack from all quarters for her handling of the law and order situation. There have been instances of school children involved in stone pelting in school uniforms while some attacks on Kashmiri students in different parts of the country have also been reported. These issues figured in the meeting.
Besides, the decision of the State government of making the Urdu language compulsory for students between Class I to Class V was another issue of contention between the BJP and Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP). Sources said that BJP workers were not happy with this decision of the government and the leadership conveyed as much to the chief minister.
Ram Madhav and Mehbooba Mufti are reportedly not getting along on many issues, especially that of handling the terror menace.
While the government has been successful in neutralising over 150 terrorists in 2016, including Burhan Wani, it failed to deal with the subsequent protests and law and order situation in the State. Protests and attack on security forces have continued and the government appeared helpless.
The chief minister had raised the issue of Kashmiri youths’ act of pelting stones in her meeting with the NITI Aayog on Sunday.
