Moon sighted, Eid-ul-Fitr in India on 5 June

New Delhi: Eid’s moon was sighted in the country on 4 June, as a result of which the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr (colloquially referred to as Meethi Eid) will be celebrated across the country on 5 June. Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bukhari declared on Tuesday that the moon had been sighted. (related reports)

Along with this, the date of Eid was announced as 5 May for India. Those wait for those observing roza (daily fast during Ramzan) is over.

Eid is celebrated on the completion of the month of Ramadan (or Ramzan) in the Islamic calendar. The festival is being celebrated in Saudi Arabia and West Asia on 4 June.

In Uttar Pradesh, after getting the information from other cities, Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahli, president of the Mercury Chamber Committee in Lucknow, announced the appearance of the moon. The ulema were present on the occasion of the announcement at the Idgah located in Ashbag, Lucknow.

Today, the moon was sighted in different cities like Kolkata, Benaras and several towns of Assam. This marks the end of the holy month of Ramzan.

The festival of Eid is celebrated when Ramadan ends. This year, Ramadan had started on 7 May; it ended on 4 June. In all, 29 rozas were observed during the period.

Shahi Imam Mufti Mukarram Ahmed of Fatehpuri Mosque of Delhi said that the festival would be celebrated across the country on Wednesday. He said that the moon sighting had been reported from many places like Patna in Bihar and Sambhal of Uttar Pradesh.

Eid-ul-Fitr is a holy festival of Muslims. It is celebrated with great fanfare. On this day, Muslims gather at a cleansed place like Idgah and offer do rakat namaz (salat) of the occasion. After the namaz, the believers greet one another.

Throughout the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast throughout the daytime and stay thirsty, too, until the evening. They are supposed to spend the whole month in the worship of Allah.
