Modi tops list of most popular world leaders with 71% rating

The approval rating of Prime Minister Modi was at its peak in May 2020 during the nationwide lockdown and at its lowest during the second Covid-19 wave in 2021

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has topped the global rating amongst world leaders with an approval rating of 71%. On the list of the 13 world leaders, US president Joe Biden is ranked at number six with a 43% rating, a position shared by Canadian President Justin Trudeau also at 43% and Australian Prime Minister at 41%.

In November 2021 too, Prime Minister Modi had topped the list of the most popular world leaders.

Morning Consult Political Intelligence (MCPI) is currently tracking the approval ratings of government leaders and country trajectories in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Since the time the MCPI started tracking each leader, the approval rating of Prime Minister Modi was at its peak in May 2020 during the nationwide lockdown, dipping to its lowest during the disastrous second Covid-19 wave last year.

The latest approval ratings are based on data collected from 13-19 January, the MCPI said on its website, adding, “Approval ratings are based on a seven-day moving average of adult residents in each country, with sample sizes varying by country.”

In May 2020, the website had given the highest rating to Prime Minister Modi with approval of 84%. In May 2021, it dipped to 63%.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who has been facing criticism over the reports of him partying in the lockdown, has received a net approval rating of -43 as 69% of respondents disapproved of the Conservative UK leader. The other leaders who have a net negative approval rating are Biden, Trudeau, Brazil’s Jair Bolsanaro, France’s Emmanuel Macron, South Korea’s Moon Jae-in, ’s Scott Morrison, and Spain’s Pedro Sachez.

The ratings are based on a seven-day moving average of adult residents, with sample sizes varying by country.
