Dozens of Muslim social media users trolled TMC parliamentarian Mimi Chakraborty after she posed for the camera in Kumortuli (also spelt Kumartuli, the place in Kolkata that traditionally houses sculptors who make idols for different Hindu occasions). Seeing the MP stand before an unfinished murti (idol) of Goddess Durga, they asked why this was an object of veneration for Hindus. One of the Facebook users went to the extent of commenting, “If you are so devoted to the goddess, why don’t you pose like her without clothes on?”
Checking the users individually showed these Muslim trolls comprised not only Bangladeshi but also Indian Muslims.
When some Hindus raised an objection, they said, “You are exhibiting nudity, and we are at fault for pointing it out?”
A Muslim user wrote, “This cannot be an object of veneration from any angle.”
Undaunted, Hindu trolls soon joined the slugfest. A woman wrote, “When your mother delivered you, she was naked. If you could recall that moment, would you lust after your mother?”
Another Hindu user wrote, “I’ve heard your Prophet Mohammed had married a daughter-like girl. Do not preach us morality of relationships.”
