Meme makers had a lot of fun time today on Twitter as news arrived that Olympic bronze-medallists India had defeated archrivals Pakistan 3-1 to register their second consecutive win and virtually qualify for the semifinals of the Asian Champions Trophy men’s hockey tournament here today. With Vice-Captain Harmanpreet Singh scoring twice in this match, Team India has put up a good show in the round-robin clashes so far, with this being India’s second win in the tournament after their 9-0 drubbing of hosts Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, Pakistan are still to register a win, having drawn goal-less against Japan in their opening match.
Indian hockey fans were jubilant, expressing joy with many a meme on social media. Fans were relieved to see India finish on the right side after being thrashed by archrivals in the T20 Cricket World Cup in October this year.
Pakistan looked threatening in the closing minutes but India walked away with full points to consolidate their position at the top of the table. Harmanpreet opened the scoring, allowing India to head into the half-time with a 1-0 lead over Pakistan.
A push from Pakistan and India got another penalty corner. Hardik Singh was the injector but well defended by Abbas. It’s still 3-1 but both sides have been intense to slot one in the closing minutes.
Akashdeep doubled the lead, scoring minutes into the third quarter before Pakistan managed to pull things back with a goal.
Back-to-back action on both ends in the final minutes of the contest. Both India and Pakistan were awarded penalty corners but only the former managed to convert it, with Harmanpreet slotting his second of the game. The last few minutes of the match have been intense.
India lost out on the review in the dying minutes as the TV umpire goes in favour of Pakistan. Just three minutes left in the contest.
Harmanpreet slotted one again towards the end to make it 3-1 in the final quarter of the all-important match.
For hockey fans in Pakistan, it was a different story. But amid the gloomy atmosphere, some managed to find a little humour.
