Mayawati calls INC bluff on Savarkar

Mayawati said it was duplicitous to curse Savarkar on the one hand and be in a coalition government with a pro-Savarkar party in Maharashtra

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati has targeted the INC over the issue of Savarkar. Mayawati said that the Shiv Sena stood by its core agenda, supported the central government on the Citizenship Amendment Bill and now it cannot stand the INC’s stand on Savarkar. The BSP leader pointed out that despite all this, the INC was running the government with the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra.

Mayawati said if the INC did not clarify its position now, the party’s posturing on Savarkar would be considered “drama” and nothing else.

Mayawati tweeted to say, “Shiv Sena is still at its core agenda, so they supported the central government on the Citizenship Amendment Bill and now they are not tolerant of the attitude of INC towards Savarkar. However, the INC is still with the Shiv Sena in the Maharashtra government. If all this is not Congress duplicity, what is?”

The BSP chief said, “So they (the INC) must clarify their position in this matter. Otherwise, to divert the public attention from their party’s weaknesses, it will be considered just a vacuous drama.”

Swords were drawn between the Shiv Sena and INC on the issue of Savarkar. On the BJP’s protest against his “Rape in India” statement, Rahul Gandhi had said on Saturday that his name was not “Rahul Savarkar” and that he would never “apologise for speaking the truth”.

After this statement of Rahul Gandhi, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said that history would not change with Rahul Gandhi’s statement. He instructed Rahul to read about Savarkar. “Rahul cannot tear the pages of history,” Raut said.

Amid growing impasse over the issue with the INC, the Shiv Sena said that the Maharashtra-based party was sticking to its old stand on Savarkar.

Raut said, “History will not change with Rahul Gandhi’s statement at Ramlila Maidan. He should read about Savarkar. Gandhi cannot tear the pages of history to change it. Savarkar has contributed to the independence of the country. Savarkar will not be valued on the basis of Rahul Gandhi’s statement.”

Former prime minister and senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh had said, “There may be differences, but Savarkar’s contribution in history is and will remain.”
