Maulana Arshad Rehmani (25), in jail on charges of raping a minor in Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur, is threatening the victim’s family, pressuring them to withdraw the case. The rape accused, along with other clerics in the seminary, is asking the 9-year-old victim’s family to get the girl married to the maulana and withdraw the case. The victim’s father has made a written complaint at the police station.
The case was registered in Police Station Khamardih of Raipur city. The cops said the accused Maulana Rahmani was a teacher at a madrassah in Pandari area. He had been going to the victim’s house to teach her and her sister Arabic for the last 15 days. On Sunday, he had raped the girl on finding her alone at home.
The police initiated an investigation into the case, Additional Superintendent of Police Tarakeswar Patel said. The cops are making efforts to book those who have threatened the victim’s family. The victim’s father says if anyone still pressures or threatens the family to withdraw the case, he will register cases against them too. The accused hails from Village Tahirpur Hasay under Police Station Dhauraiya of District Banka of Bihar.
The father of the victim lodged another complaint after the rape in the police station. According to the second FIR, some people associated with the madrassah (Islamic seminary) have threatened the family of the victim to withdraw the case or else the daughter would be defamed and the family would be excommunicated.
The police registered a case of rape and POCSO Act Sunday night and arrested accused Maulana Arshad Rahmani from Pandari Adarsh Nagar and locked him up.
Maulana Arshad Rahmani had been living in a madrassah in Raipur for the last about four years. Police said that even before this, the maulana had been accused of molestation. After receiving the complaint, the police arrested the maulana and booked him under Section 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act.
