Kolkata: Accusing the Congress of enjoying the support of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in the Lok Sabha election, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said at a public meeting that former President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit was contesting with the help of the RSS.

The BJP and the Congress are nothing different; the Congress is contesting in the State in collaboration with the BJP, the chief minister alleged at the election campaign of Chopra in northern Dinajpur.

Banerjee did not stop here. Within minutes, she made apparently wild allegations against two other Congress candidates, Adhir Chowdhury and Abhijit Mukherjee. The Trinamool chief complained that these two Congress candidates were contesting with the help of the RSS.

Banerjee’s accusations reached Congress president Rahul Gandhi in no time. Gandhi was in the State to campaign for Deepa Dasmunshi in Raiganj. Shortly after the Bengal chief minister’s speech, Rahul thundered, “Did we ever join the BJP in the past? Mamata has allied with them.”

Gandhi accused the Trinamool government in Bengal of not fulfilling the needs of the poor.

Chowdhury reacted to Banerjee’s allegation too. He said, “Mamata is a member of the core committee of the RSS. She is heard speaking the language of the RSS whenever we raise the issue of minorities.”

Mukherjee questioned, “Who was the railway minister in Vajpayee’s cabinet? Mamata Bandyopadhyay (another word for Banerjee). People know who is an ally of whom.”

The chief minister was in an aggressive mood right from the beginning of her speech at the Chopra rally at noon. The CPI(M), the Congress and the BJP have virtually united all over the State to defeat the Trinamool in the elections, she said.

Speaking in support of Trinamool candidate Amar Singh Rai at the Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency, the chief minister said, “CPM-Congress and BJP — these three are actually one. This entity is CPM in the morning, Congress in the afternoon and BJP at night!”

She attacked Adhir Chowdhury next and thereafter Pranab Mukherjee’s son. “Wherever the Congress is weak, the RSS is helping it backstage,” Banerjee alleged. She said the Congress candidates of Berhampur and Jangipur are contesting with the help of the RSS.

Then she trained her guns at the RSS. “You know what the RSS is? These people used to roam around in half pants at one point of time. They are not real Hindus. I was born in a Hindu family. I worship Durga; I worship Chandi every morning. The RSS people don’t worship Durga or Kali.”

“There is no chance of the CPM or the Congress winning. Giving them your votes means helping the BJP. In this election, give the BJP a rasogolla (rasgulla) and the Congress and CPM a rajbhog each,” Banerjee said at the rally.

Finally, she complained that the Darjeeling seat is won sometimes by the BJP and at other times by the Congress. She said the Trinamool had never won from here. She sought votes for her candidate Amar Singh Rai from the constituency.
