Even if she were to get a job fetching Rs 3 lakh a month in the US, she wouldn't go! Because in Bengal, even if the salary is Rs 10,000, one could save Rs 5,000out of it. How? West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee explained the calculation from the stage of Utkarsh Bengal at Kharagpur Stadium today.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee handed over the appointment letters to those who left an impression of the best in technical training in Utkarsh Bengal at the Kharagpur Stadium. She said on the occasion, "I raised some Scheduled Caste girls. Then I got them married. I also gave jobs to the grooms. I was the railway minister then. This happened some 22 years ago."
The chief minister said that one of the couples had a daughter. The girl grew up and got a job after completing her studies. At first, she worked in the state. Then, one day, Mamata Banerjee came to know that the girl had gone to America for a job. Her salary in the US would, converted into Indian currency, be Rs 3 lakh.
Mamata Banerjee said, "If I get a job worth Rs 3 lakh in America, Rs 2 lakh will be spent on food and car. The standard of living there is high. I will be left with nothing. But if I get Rs 10,000 in Bengal, my ration is free, health is free. I have farmer friends. Things are cheap here. I stay at my home; I don't pay the house rent; the house belongs to my parents. I stay at home; the food is not paid for, it is so for everybody in the family. That means I get Rs 10,000, save Rs 5,000 and contribute to the household or save that sum."
Furthering the debatable calculation, Mamata Banerjee said in Kharagpur, "Some people have found employment in drying and packaging water hyacinth lately. Even leaves of sal are being dried and dished."
The chief minister proposed another employment opportunity: "Have you seen big leaves? Say, a palm leaf" If you stick a stick in it, it will become a thonga (a funnel-shaped small container of things, especially food items, made of paper or dried leaves). You don't need to buy them anymore." Mamata Banerjee urged the people to look for business opportunities everywhere. "Only then will it work. If someone asks, 'What are you doing?' Say, 'This will make you a millionaire!'"
The chief minister said that 30,000 people will be recruited before Durga Puja. Besides, once the Deucha Pachami coal mine project is running, it will create 1 lakh jobs, she added.
