Maharashtra govt to reserve 80% private jobs for locals

Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari said that the SS-NCP-INC government would soon make necessary laws to enable such reservations

In a populist move, albeit promised in the Shiv Sena manifesto, which could lead to a flight of capital from the State, the Maharashtra government today announced via Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari that the State government will ensure 80% reservation in private jobs for the local people by bringing in suitable laws. The governor made this announcement while addressing a joint meeting of MLAs in the Vidhan Bhavan.

The governor said that the Maha Vikas Aghadi government of Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress is worried about unemployment.

Following the governor’s address, the lower house of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly was adjourned till 16 December.

INC’s Nana Patole was meanwhile elected as the speaker unopposed in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Sunday. The BJP had withdrawn the name of its candidate Kisan Shankar Kathore, after which Nana Patole was certain to be elected unopposed.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray congratulated Patole and said that the latter had come from a peasant family and “I am sure he will do justice to all”.

Speaking in the House, Thackeray praised Devendra Fadnavis, too. Uddhav said, “I have learnt a lot from Devendra Fadnavis and I will always be his friend. I am still with the ideology of ‘Hindutva’ and will never leave it.”

Thackeray said, “I have never cheated the government in the last five years.”

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis was elected the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly on Sunday. He said, “An opponent does not mean an enemy, but an ideological opposition. Those who were on opposite sides yesterday have become friends today and those who were friends have become opponents.”

Speaking in the House, Fadnavis said, “I had said I would come again and the people of Maharashtra gave us a mandate for this, but we did not respect this mandate. I did not say when I would come. But now say I want to say, ‘I am a sea. Do not build houses on the shore seeing my waters ebb. I will come back again’.”
