In yet another case of love jihad, Sravanti, a 19-year-old Hindu woman who had converted to Islam to marry Salman in January of this year, has committed suicide. The inter-faith marriage did not last long, with her body found hanging from a ceiling on 24 May. Her parents and relatives allege foul play.
Salman used to live in Indira Nagar Colony those days, where they began courting. Sravanti converted to Islam to marry Salman and changed her name to Sheikh Samira.
The nikah of 19-year-old Sravanti, a resident of Indira Nagar Colony in District Kamarreddy, with Salman, a clerk, had been solemnised in District Kamareddy in Telangana, about 100 km north of Hyderabad on 7 January.
Two months after the wedding, the couple moved somewhere else. And barely four months have passed since then, and she has reportedly committed suicide.
Sravanti’s relatives now allege torture, pointing at strange injuries on her back.
They allege that the victim was beaten to death and demand strict action against Salman and his family for mentally harassing and physically torturing their daughter. They suspect foul play in what is being passed off as suicide.
The relatives of the victim demand that Salman, his aunt and uncle be arrested for the ‘murder’ of their daughter. It is alleged that this was a case of grooming love jihad, all along. Devunipalli police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
The anti-conversion laws, effectively legislation to curb love jihad, introduced some time ago in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, have not seen a decline in these kinds of shady marriages where Hindu women are waylaid or forced into Islamic contract marriages, which mostly end disastrously.
“Love jihad” is a coinage by Christians of Kerala, much as a large section of the news media lies about the origin of the term and projects it as a paranoid propaganda by Hindus.
