Liverpool turns ‘intolerant’ towards Muslims: Here’s why

A Christian-to-Muslim convert had had an asylum claim rejected in 2014, after which he blew himself up with a bomb outside the Liverpool Women’s Hospital

While Liverpool MP Kim Johnson has warned that Muslims in her constituency are facing “racial hatred” after the terrorist incident in the city last weekend, people here are hardly impressed by the politically correct statement after suspected terrorist Emad al-Swealmeen, a convert from Christianity, who had reportedly had an asylum claim rejected in 2014, blew himself up with a home-made bomb.

The 32-year-old Muslim terrorist had died after the device exploded in a taxi outside Liverpool Women’s Hospital shortly before 11 AM on Remembrance Sunday. Taxi driver David Perry survived the blast.

During an urgent question on the suicide bombing, Johnson said these incidents “always provoke a spike in race hate and particular (sic) in the Muslim community”.

The Labour MP for Liverpool Riverside warned that “women wearing the hijab are facing abuse” and called on the government to review funding for security support in religious communities.

Shadow security minister Conor McGinn asked the government why none of the recommendations from 2017 on homemade explosive devices, namely regulations around ingredients and chemicals used to make them, have been implemented.

Home Office minister Kit Malthouse said that “significant resources” were available to counter-extremism projects.

Police said it could take “many weeks” before they fully understand what happened in terms of planning, preparation and how things unfolded.

An unnamed source quoted in the Sun said that an issue being considered is whether the suspected attacker was motivated by an “unresolved grievance” with the Home Office over a bid to become a British resident.

Malcolm Hitchcott, who with his wife Elizabeth had taken Swealmeen in to live with them, said the suspect had first come to Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral in 2015 and wanted to convert from to Christianity.

A spokesman for Liverpool Cathedral confirmed that Swealmeen was baptised in 2015 and confirmed in 2017, but lost contact with the cathedral in 2018.

NHS organisations, including trusts and GP surgeries, have been asked to review their security arrangements after Britain’s threat level was raised from substantial to severe following the incident.

Four men arrested under laws in the Kensington area of Liverpool three aged 21, 26 and 29, who were held on Sunday, and a 20-year-old man who was detained on Monday have now been released from police custody following interviews.
