A member of a community that has traditionally been in the business of selling animal meat has served a legal notice to Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien for using the term “butcher of Gujarat” in a derogatory manner for the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
Petitioner Ganibhai Qureshi, president of Jamiatul Quresh, using the Hindi translation of “butcher” — kasai — has demanded an explanation from O’Brien as it why he is projecting the whole community in poor light “as if they are doing something filthy”.
The petitioner has demanded whether this is the official position of the party O’Brien belongs to.
He has also demanded that an “unconditional apology” be tendered to Modi and his supporters as well, and withdraw the “reckless and irresponsible statements with an undertaking not to use such derogatory and offending words in future”.
