Bengaluru: With their MLAs holed up at Hotel Hilton on the road to Bengaluru airport, Congress and JD(S) quietly got down to the tricky business of power-sharing and portfolio distribution. However, JD(S) leader has dismissed reports about his party working out a power-sharing formula of heading the government for 30 months each, with its coalition partner the Congress.
Meanwhile, HD Kumaraswamy, the Chief Minister designate of the Congress-JDS alliance in Karnataka, will meet Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in Delhi today. The JD(S) leader is expected to meet the Gandhis to discuss the Cabinet ahead of his oath ceremony.
Though a final picture will emerge after Kumaraswamy meets Rahul Gandhi and Sonia in Delhi today, it’s expected that Congress will land 20 berths in the 33-member State cabinet.
But even with its 20 seats, Congress will have a proportionately lower representation – 26%, as it has 78 MLAs – than JD(S). Kumaraswamy’s party now has 37 MLAs after he vacated his Ramanagara seat. With 13 ministers, that’s 35% of JD(S)’s total strength.
In addition to the CM’s post, JD(S) is expected to keep plum portfolios like finance, PWD and irrigation.
Kumaraswamy has rubbished reports on the powersharing formula of 30 months each as “bogus”. He insisted that no discussion has taken place so far on the allocation of ministerial berths.

Congress, according to sources, has already taken a decision to give the deputy CM post to Dalits and Parameshwara is their likely choice. Now that the Lingayats have put forth their demand, Congress is likely to oblige to get rid of the anti-Lingayat tag it had earned post-Siddaramaiah government’s efforts to give it a minority religion tag.

Kumaraswamy had headed the BJP-JD(S) coalition government for 20 months from January 2006, under a power-sharing agreement of leading the coalition for 20 months each. The JD(S) had then reneged on its commitment to share the power for the remaining 20 months with the BJP and refused to hand over the mantle to BS Yeddyurappa, causing the collapse of the government.

In the following elections in 2008, BJP had stormed to power on its own with Yeddyurappa as Chief Minister of the first-ever saffron party government in the South.
