Lucknow: The MLA from Unnao of Uttar Pradesh who had brought the BJP considerable ignominy, Kuldeep Singh Sengar, has finally been arrested for his alleged involvement in the gang-rape of a minor in 2017. [Sirf News editorial on the issue]
The CBI began interrogating the MLA at its office in the city in the morning. Unsatisfied with his responses to the queries of the investigators, the CBI arrested him.
The CBI also summoned Unnao DSP Ashtbhuja Singh and Circle Officer Swatantra Kumar Singh for questioning in connection with the Unnao rape case. The agency has called ADM BN Yadav for a round of interrogation, too.
The family of the victim demanded exemplary punishment for the accused the moment the news of his arrest arrived. They have told the Uttar Pradesh government that a mere arrest wouldn’t satisfy them. The family also spoke to journalists, saying that they were concerned for their security and that the State government should ensure they stay safe. It is to be noted that the uncle and the now killed father of the victim have criminal antecedents, too, because of which the father was in judicial custody. The MLA’s brother was arrested recently for leading a gang to beat him up mercilessly, the incident that claimed his life eventually.
The mother of the victim said, on getting the news of KS Sengar’s arrest, “I want him to be hanged. I am happy that he has been arrested, but that is not enough.”
“My husband will never return to me,” the rape victim’s mother lamented, adding, “But the accused must be punished. Kuldeep and his brother Atul must be hanged.”
Not everybody in the ruling party is comfortable with the turn of events, though. Addressing the press, BJP MP from New Delhi Meenakshi Lekhi said, “Accused must be punished and victims should get justice. The country is ours, the accused should not be allowed to escape. The government has condemned both Kathua and Unnao rape cases.”
However, she added, “The Unnao incident took place 10 months ago. The police presented their case before the magistrate. In that, the MLA was not named. The victim wrote letters to the prime minister and Yogi Adityanath, and in that she accused the MLA Kuldeep Sengar. Then, the probe began,” she said.
