‘Kashi, Mathura bāqi hai,’ RSS remembers

The Gyanvapi Mosque at the site of Kashi Vishwanath temple and the Eidgah at the Krishna Janmbhoomi symbolise India’s 'slavery', RSS holds

Still tentative about the launch of a campaign for possession of the Muslim-usurped Hindu sites in Varanasi (Kashi) and Mathura, RSS has but recognised sister organisation Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s demand for a debate on the continuation of Islamic places of worship built by demolishing parts of the Kashi Vishwanath Mandir and Krishna Janmabhoomi during successive Muslim invaders’ reign culminating in Mughal Aurangzeb’s rule. This has been among the unfinished agendas of the Sangh Parivar since the heady days of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement when Hindu activists would chant the slogan, “Yeh to kewal jhānki hai, Kashi, Mathura bāqi hai (this is just a trailer; we have to free Kashi and Mathura too)!”

The RSS says that the at the site of Kashi Vishwanath temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, and the Eidgah at the Krishna Janmbhoomi, symbolise India’s “slavery” under “foreign” aggressors who destroyed symbols of religion and culture and converted existing shrines to their own faiths.

With the Supreme Court accepting a PIL challenging the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991 (brought in by the INC’s Narasimha Rao government), which froze the denominational character of places of worship, including those in Varanasi and Mathura, Sangh sources said it was time that the issue was debated publicly.

While it is yet to be seen how the government responds to the notice from the apex court, the political orientation of Ashwini Upadhyay, who switched from the AAP to the BJP unable to live with what he found anti-nation activities by Arvind Kejriwal and his deputies, is obvious.

Upadhyay has filed four petitions seeking promulgation of uniform laws on an entire gamut of issues related to personal laws which should come under the purview of a uniform civil code, another key theme of the RSS and BJP.

During an interaction with proponents of Mathura and Kashi temples in Agra recently, RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat had urged them to remain calm and have “patience”.

Sangh members want to work for “consensus” for an acceptance of “Hindu claims” on Kashi and Mathura. “There should be a debate on the issue in which the media can play an important role,” a Sangh member said. “However, we believe that there should be a spontaneous approach rather than imposing another movement for any change in the structures of religious sites,” the member added.

“We’ve gradually shed the British legacy. Similarly, there should be a debate on how long can one allow the existence of structures which symbolise an attack on India’s religious belief and traditions,” the member said. “The pope recently visited Iran with a sole purpose that the churches demolished should be reconstructed. Our country had witnessed similar attacks on religious monuments during Mughals and other Islamic rulers,” the Hindu activist said.

Kashi, Mathura plundered in Muslim hate for Hindus

Mahmud of Ghazni wrote in 1017-18 (about the original temple dedicated to Krishna), “If anyone wished to construct a building equal to it, he would not be able to do so without spending a hundred million dinars, and the work would occupy two hundred years, even though the ablest and experienced workmen were employed.” He ordered to burn all the temples and demolish them. He plundered gold and idols and carried away a load of a hundred camels.

Abdullah, in the reign of Mughal emperor Jehangir, mentions in Tarikh-i-Daudi the destruction of Mathura and its temples by Delhi Sultan Sikandar Lodi in the 16th century. Lodi had prohibited Hindus from bathing in the river and shaving heads on the banks as well.

The remnants of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple can be seen on the walls of the Gyanvapi Mosque. The stands today on the destroyed original temple. The original Hindu place of worship had been destroyed and rebuilt a number of times. The temple structure that existed prior to the construction of the mosque was built by Raja Man Singh during Akbar’s reign.

Aurangzeb’s demolition of the temple was motivated by his and his followers’ Islamist hatred. In a clear indication of what the Kashi Vishwanath Temple used to be in its original form, Nandi, the divine vehicle of Shiva who is always supposed to face Him, faces in a direction opposite to the makeshift linga in this temple. The linga at the temple seen today was placed after the original installation was demolished by Muslims.
