Senior INC MLA and former Karnataka assembly speaker KR Ramesh Kumar outraged the people by saying inside the assembly, “When rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy it.” The disgusting remark came when MLAs began to demand time from Speaker Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri to discuss the issue of crop loss. Soon, a video of the controversial statement went viral, much to the embarrassment of the INC.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media. What is perhaps no less repulsive is that the current Karnataka Assembly Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri did not object to the comment but was seen giggling on hearing the comment.
When the debate on crop loss due to untimely rain was prolonged with more members seeking time to speak on the issue, an exasperated Kageri said his position was like someone who is compelled to enjoy an adverse situation when it’s forced on one.
“I have no objection to more members speaking about the subject, but my concern is that no other business can be conducted if we stick to one particular issue. My position is like a person who would enjoy something when it is inevitable,” said Kageri looking at Ramesh Kumar, who said, “There is a saying — when rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy it.” Kageri chose not to expunge the remark from records.
When Kumar was the assembly speaker, he had compared himself to a rape survivor when his name emerged in a controversial audio clip.
A day after the gang-rape of a college student in Mysuru recently, Home Minister Araga Jnanendra had caused outrage with his statements by ‘joking’ about the incident. Accusing the INC of ‘politicising’ it, the minister had on 26 August said, “Rape has occurred there (Mysuru). But the INC is trying to rape the home minister here.”
