Kalicharan Maharaj arrested for ‘hate speech’

Chhattisgarh Police teams were sent to Aloka, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh to arrest Kalicharan Maharaj after Chhattisgarh Police lodged an FIR against him

In a development highlighting the vice-like grip of the narrative of false gods in India since the British Raj, Chhattisgarh Police has early in the morning arrested Kalicharan Maharaj from Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, for his hate speech and derogatory remarks against Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on 26 December.

“The seer, who hails from Akola in Maharashtra, was arrested around 4 AM today when he reached a cottage reserved for his stay at the famous tourist location,” said the state police.

Kalicharan Maharaj is expected to be brought to Raipur by late in the evening.

Teams of Chhattisgarh Police were sent to Aloka in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh to arrest Kalicharan Maharaj after Chhattisgarh Police lodged an FIR against him for making derogatory remarks against MK Gandhi and hailing his assassin Nathuram Godse.

While delivering a speech at ‘Dharma Sansad’ in Raipur, the saint did some plain-speak, albeit interspersed with unprintable expletives, about British-propped national hero Gandhi. The who had earned a name for himself with an energetic rendition of Shiva Tandava Stotra composed by Ravana of the Ramayana allegedly spoke ill of Muslims at the event too.

The video of his speech was widely circulated on social media where he is seen targeting Muslims and appeasement politics, slandering and spreading hatred by using anecdotes from India’s independence in the 1940s.

Commenting on the so-called father of the nation, he said, “Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi destroyed the country and I hail Nathuram Godse for his assassination.”

Other saints sitting on the dais were seen laughing while the crowd hailed the saint. The organisers, known otherwise as supporters of the Indian National Congress, appeared embarrassed about the speech after the function and apologised for it. One such ‘sadhu’ called Vinodam had appeared recently on the debate show of Sirf News.

Based on a complaint lodged by former mayor and INC worker Pramod Dubey, a case was lodged against Sant Kalicharan Maharaj under Sections 294 and 505 (2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for using obscene words in the public and provoking enmity among communities.

A day later, Kalicharan Maharaj circulated another video expressing that he stood by what he said at the Dharam Sansad. Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, reacting to his statements, said Kalicharan must surrender if he was so courageous failing which the state would go after him for his arrest.
