Jio Phone’s greatest attraction, cheapest plan of Rs 49, gone

While customers flocked to Jio stores that was offering phones for Rs 1,500 each, its greatest attraction was the lowest plan of Rs 49

On 6 December, Reliance Jio made a change in its tariff plans, which did not accommodate the increase in its costs. The company has not yet increased the prices of most of these plans, but the cheapest one is now gone. The Rs 49 plan of the company has been withdrawn.

Now Jio plans start with the Rs 75 pack. A few weeks ago, Jio had introduced new all-in-one plans for Jio Phone users, of which the Rs 75 plan was a part.

Jio offers its customers plans of Rs 99, Rs 153, Rs 297 and Rs 594, but they need to recharge the IUC top-up for non-Jio minutes. The IUC is about interconnection. One of the primary tools used by regulators to introduce competition in telecommunications markets has been to impose interconnection requirements on dominant carriers. This interconnection usage charge (IUC) is the factor that increased mobile service tariffs first. Vodafone Idea and Airtel had announced before this an increase in their tariff prices, which will be effective beginning 1 December. These increased prices are applicable to both prepaid and postpaid connections.

The phone of Reliance Jio attracted millions of customers due to the price of Rs 1,500. However, the biggest attraction in the device, the Rs 49 plan, is now gone. In this plan, Jio used to give unlimited voice calling without FUP limit and 1GB data for 28 days. After the arrival of the IUC top-up voucher, the customers who bought the Rs 49 plan were required to purchase the IUC top-up recharge.

Last week, Reliance Jio updated its tariff plans by increasing the prices across plans. The removal of the Rs 49 plan can be part of this. Since the plans of Jio Phone have not been updated, now the prices start with the Rs 75 pack.

Last month, Reliance Jio introduced all-in-one recharge plans for Jio Phone. Non-live minutes are available in these plans. These plans are of Rs 75, Rs 125, Rs 155 and Rs 185. In the base plan, i.e. Rs 75 plan, customers will get unlimited Jio to Jio voice calling, 500 min of non-Jio calling, 100 MB data daily, 50 SMS in all and 28 days of validity.
