Jesus is real god… unlike Shakti: Pastor infamous for hate speech tells Rahul Gandhi

Indian National Congress (INC) MP Rahul Gandhi made a remark in a conversation with a pastor, which is making people doubt what the leader's religion is. The former INC president had a meeting with controversial Tamil pastor George Ponnaiah, a video clip of which went viral. The pastor can be heard saying in the clip, "Jesus is the real god… not like shakti."

During the meeting, the Waynad MP asked the pastor if Jesus was a form of God, to which, Ponniah replied, "Jesus is the real God. God reveals Him(self) as a man, a real person…not like Shakti…so we see a human person."

BJP and INC politicians got into a heated exchange of words on Twitter over the conversation, with the ruling party's spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla hitting out at Rahul Gandhi for the meeting, saying, "This is not Jodo but Nafrat Jodo."

Shehzad Poonawalla questioned the purpose of Rahul Gandhi's meeting with the controversial pastor, whose provocative statements had landed him in in the past. Ponnaiah was arrested in July 2021 in Madurai for allegedly making a 'hate speech' against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, DMK Minister and others.

"It's Rahul Gandhi's Nafrat Jodo Abhiyan. Today they've made a person like George Ponnaiah the poster boy of Jodo Yatra who challenged, threatened Hindus and said inappropriate things about Bharat Mata. Congress has a long history of being anti-Hindu," Poonawalla said.

INC's Jairam Ramesh posted a retort, saying it was "typical BJP mischief that has become more desperate after the successful launch of the Jodo Yatra". "People who were responsible for the killing of Mahatma Gandhi and the murders of people like Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare, MM Kalburgi and Gauri Lankesh are raising questions! What a morbid joke! Such attempts to damage the spirit of Bharat Jodo Yatra will fail miserably!" Jairam Ramesh wrote in a tweet.

"BJP's Hate Factory is trying to make a shoddy tweet viral. It has nothing to do with what is recorded in the audio. This is the typical frivolous way of the BJP. Seeing the successful launch of Jodo Yatra and the support they are getting, they are disheartened," the INC leader and former union minister wrote in another tweet.

Shehzad Poonawalla countered Jairam Ramesh's statement, asking "why did Rahul Gandhi meet a person (Tamil pastor George Ponnaiah) who was jailed for his venom against Mata?" the BJP spokesman tweeted.
