When Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Jaya Bachchan rose to speak on the NDPS (Amendment) Bill, 2021, there were heated exchanges between her and the treasury benches, forcing Bhubaneswar Kalita, who was in the chair, to adjourn the House till 5 PM.
After she rose to speak, Jaya Bachchan was not heard saying a word on the proposed amendment in the NDPS law. She instead went on and on about the conduct of others in the house, including that of Kalita who was acting on his own behalf before managing the chair for while in the absence of Chairman Venkaiah Naidu. A BJP MP then rose to object, saying the SP MP was casting aspersions on the chair.
Then, sources in the oposition claim, a member from the treasury bench made a personal remark about the Bachchan family in the light of the Enforcement Directorate’s summons to actress and the SP MP’s daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Retorting, a combative Jaya Bachchan said: “Aapke bure din aaenge (your bad patch would arrive eventually). I curse you.”
Jaya Bachchan then indulged in arguments with members of the treasury benches instead of addressing the chair. On being intervened, she said she was given a chance to speak and the chair should not interject now. The chair said it was, of course, her turn to speak but only on the subject of NDPS. She couldn’t care less, moving to the issue of the ouster of 12 MPs from the Rajya Sabha at the beginning of the winter session for their unruly conduct in August.
