Former cricketer Irfan Pathan, who hails from Gujarat, is news again — this time once again for a wrong reason. Syed Ibrahim of Ahmedabad has accused him of having an illicit relationship with the former’s daughter-in-law.
The old man, who has retired from Ahmedabad Police, and his wife allege that Irfan Pathan has been threatening their family along with their son of using the influence the former cricketer wields to harm them.
The Ahmedabad family has released a video saying that if they do not get justice, they will commit suicide. After the video went viral, the police have registered a case against elderly Syed Ibrahim and his wife for threatening suicide — instead of moving against Irfan Pathan.
The woman, who is accused of having an extramarital affair with Irfan Pathan, has, in turn, registered a case of dowry harassment against her parents-in-law.
Sources in the Vejalpur police station say that Ibrahim, the accuser, is an accused too. His daughter-in-law filed the complaint of dowry harassment on 11 March.
Ibrahim’s family says that their daughter-in-law is implicating him in a false case while it’s she who has an illicit relationship with Irfan.
The police have initiated an inquiry into the matter.
Ibrahim’s daughter-in-law happens to be Irfan’s cousin. Conjugal relationships between cousins are permitted in the Islamic community although extramarital affairs are not. Ibrahim’s son Syed says that his wife and Irfan have had a relationship for years. It continued as an illicit extramarital affair after her marriage with Syed.
Syed says that his wife and Irfan often spend long hours in video calling. He accused his wife of often “sneaking around” with Irfan.
When the whole family came to know about this, Syed says, his wife made a false accusation of dowry harassment against him.
Since the time the video of Ibrahim’s family went viral, the family members have kept their phone switched off.
Irfan Pathan or his family has not reacted to the news so far. Cops from the Vejalpur police station in Ahmedabad have not approached Irfan Pathan either.
Irfan Pathan, since his retirement, has not been unknown to controversies, of course. In June 2020, the former first-class cricketer of Team India had taken to Twitter to opine, “Racism is not restricted to the colour of skin. Not allowing to buy a home in a housing society just because you have a different faith is a part of racism too…”
