New Delhi: Bottom-placed Delhi Daredevils will clash against Indian Premier League (IPL) table toppers Sunrisers Hyderabad as they meet again on Thursday in New Delhi.
With just three wins from a total of ten matches, Shreyas Iyer-led side desperately requires a win if they want to progress further in the tournament. Performing better under the new captain after Gautam Gambhir stepped down, it will be an uphill task for the IPL team, who need to make sure they do not commit small mistakes.
Delhi Daredevils, at the bottom of the table and out of the race for all practical purposes, host table-topper SRH, playing more for pride than anything else.
DD have 3 wins from 10 matches and are now at desperate station; if they lose one more match, even the mathematical probability of them making the playoffs will evaporate.
Shreyas Iyer’s team still has 4 games left, and will know anything less than 4 wins will leave their hopes of qualifying for playoffs close to impossible – no team has ever qualified with 12 points.
Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Trent Boult and recently, Amit Mishra have been in good form, but DD still haven’t found the kind of collective performance to kill off games.
3 overseas batsmen DD have used Glenn Maxwell, Colin Munro and Jason Roy have contributed 293 runs, dismissed for single-digit scores on nine occasions. DD will look towards Trent Boult and Amit Mishra to do the bulk of the damage with the ball; Boult has more wickets than the Daredevils’ second and third highest wicket-takers combined.
SRH are nearly through to the playoffs, and they would have shifted their target to finish the league season among the top 2 teams.
Bowlers win matches; the performance of Sunrisers Hyderabad this season is a testimony to that. Sunrisers are the only team with a 100% record while defending totals. Its batting hasn’t set the field afire but the last time the two teams faced-off, in Hyderabad, the batsmen took SRH past the post.
Apart from Kane Williamson, the top order has failed to get going and the lower order has not been able to provide the finishing touches. The SRH captain has illustrated that it isn’t all about bludgeoning the ball, but one can also succeed by batting responsibly and batting the traditionally correct way.
The Sunrisers, at the moment, have a dream bowling line-up; each individual in the bowling attack has understood his role in the team, and every one of the bowlers appears to have figured out how to pick wickets.
