IPL 2018: KKR starts afresh against RCB without Gambhir

Kohli and AB de Villiers will once again form a strong top-order with 2,212 runs together in 53 innings

|

Kolkata: The Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore will open their VIVO IPL 2018 campaign in Match 3.
KKR, who will be led by the ever-bustling Dinesh Karthik this season, have several players from the squad that made the journey to the Playoffs last season.

As KKR seeks to create a new identity in the post-Gautam Gambhir era, it would not be a surprise to see a packed Sunday Eden crowd rooting for the star Indian skipper Virat Kohli in the RCB jersey.

Karthik’s last ball six in the T20 Tri-nation final win over Bangladesh last month sent a timely assurance to the KKR loyalists but the wicketkeeper-batsman has an envious task at hand to match or better what Gambhir did as the southpaw led KKR to two titles in 2012 and 2014.

KKR’s nucleus is intact in Robin Uthappa, Chris Lynn, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav.

RCB announced they would retain Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Sarfaraz Khan and then used the Right to Match card in the auction to secure the services of Yuzvendra Chahal.

Kohli and AB de Villiers will once again form a strong top-order with 2,212 runs together in 53 innings, including seven-century stands.

Only 3 players have captained the Kolkata Knight Riders in the ten seasons of the IPL so far – namely Sourav Ganguly, Brendon McCullum and Gautam Gambhir now Dinesh Karthik will become the 4th player to lead the franchise.

The captain winning the toss opted to chase in each of the 7 IPL matches played at the Eden Gardens last season.
