IPL 2018: KKR, SRH jostle for final spot

KKR's path to the knockouts, on the other hand, has been a zig-zag affair, which needed four successive wins to stay in the competition

Kolkata: The Kolkata Knight Riders put on a stellar performance as they defeated the Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator of the Indian Premier League 2018 season to enter the second playoff. They will now take on the Sunrisers Hyderabad in a bid to enter the final against the on 27 May.

The Dinesh-Karthik led side finished third on the points table with eight wins to their name. They went into the Eliminator as the favourites since they were playing in front of their home crowd and they did not disappoint.

KKR’s path to the knockouts has been a zig-zag affair, which needed four successive wins to stay in the competition.

Most recently, in the Eliminator, they defeated the Rajasthan Royals, who at one stage were comfortably placed in their run-chase.  KKR’s Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell strike at 156.47. In fact, it was the contributions from Karthik, Russell and Shubman Gill that bailed them out against Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator after their top-three flopped.

The spin trio of Kuldeep Yadav, Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav will be at the heart of KKR’s bowling plans. Each one of them is attacking by nature and has bowled a match-winning spell at least once in the season; together, they’ve collected 42 wickets which account for nearly 50% of the wickets taken by KKR bowlers.

The Sunrisers need to arrest their four-match losing streak if they hope to make the final. Prior to their four back-to-back losses, SRH were on a roll; they had won eight of their first ten matches, had stitched together their longest winning streak, and became the first team to secure a playoff berth.

In Shikhar Dhawan, Shreevats Goswami and Williamson, SRH have a potent and in-form top-order, but the problem begins from No four onwards. Manish Pandey, Yusuf Pathan, and Shakib Al Hasan have all played at least 11 innings each this season, and yet their average strike-rate reads 120.19.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Siddarth Kaul, and Sandeep Sharma have accounted for 39 wickets so far, Rashid Khan, with 18 wickets from 14 matches, is league’s most successful spinner.
