The International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) has issued a Blue Corner notice to help locate self-styled preacher Nithyananda at the request of Gujarat Police.

Gujarat Police had reported in November last year that self-styled preacher Nithyananda had fled the country. He is absconding since a rape case was filed against him in Karnataka.

The police arrested two women followers of Nithyananda: Sadhvi Pran Priyananda and Priyatattva Riddhi Kiran. The two were accused of allegedly abducting four children and holding them hostage in a flat.

Meanwhile, Nithyananda bought an island in Ecuador, South America, and named it Kailasa. According to several reports, Nithyananda declared this island a Hindu nation.

However, when asked for confirmation of these reports, the Ministry of External Affairs said that it has no such information. Gujarat Police has confirmed that Nithyananda is absconding and is not in India. Gujarat Police had said on 21 November last year that self-styled preacher Nithyananda had fled the country.

The police registered a criminal case against Nithyananda.

Ahmedabad (Rural) Superintendent of Police SV Asari said that Nithyananda had fled the country only after a rape case was registered against him in Karnataka. Gujarat police will seek his custody through proper channels.

The women followers of the alleged charlatan Sadhvi Pran Priyanand and Priyatattva Riddhi Kiran are accused of allegedly abducting four children and holding them hostage in a flat.

The police are investigating also the case of a woman missing from Nithyananda’s ashram. Janardan Sharma, the woman’s father, lodged the complaint. The police had registered this case on 20 November.

Nithyananda is accused of kidnapping children and raising donations from followers to host Yogini Sarvajnapeetham in Ahmedabad.

Interpol is an international organisation that facilitates worldwide police cooperation and crime control. An Interpol notice is an international alert circulated by Interpol to communicate information about crimes, criminals, and threats by police in a member state (or an authorised international entity) to their counterparts around the world. The information disseminated via notices concerns individuals wanted for serious crimes, missing persons, unidentified bodies, possible threats, prison escapes, and criminals’ modus operandi.

An Interpol Blue Corner notice is issued against a criminal on the run. There are eight types of notices, seven of which are colour-coded by their function: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Black, Orange, and Purple. The most well-known notice is the Red Notice which is the “closest instrument to an international arrest warrant in use today”
