IndiGo bars 9 journalists for unruly conduct in Kangana’s flight

IndiGo has decided to bar nine media personnel from flying with the airline for 15 days over their alleged unruly behaviour onboard a flight in which actor Kangana Ranaut was travelling to Mumbai from Chandigarh in September.

Sources in IndiGo say this action was recommended by an internal committee that was set up in the wake of reprimanding the airline for not acting against mediapersons who allegedly behaved in an unruly fashion.

The incident in question took place on 9 September. The journalists have been barred from flying with IndiGo between 15-30 October.

Following the 9 September incident, the Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had written a strongly worded letter to IndiGo CEO Wolfgang Prock-Schauer, listing out the violations that allegedly took place on the Chandigarh-Mumbai flight.

It was alleged that some mediapersons violated safety and social distancing norms while reporting about Kangana Ranaut, who was travelling to Mumbai.

The had issued an order warning all domestic airlines that it would suspend a flight for two weeks if any such violation is found hereafter.

The aviation regulator has instructed IndiGo to take action against all those who violated guidelines and SOPs, and submit an action taken report. The had warned it will take suitable action if the airlines fails to submit the report.

DGCA had said there were multiple issues involved in the case. The prominent ones include photography on board a flight (violation of Aircraft rules 13), violation of COVID-19 protocols and certain actions falling within the purview of unruly behavior on board.

Actor Kangana Ranaut was travelling in the said flight from her hometown in Manali to Mumbai on 9 September after making a public announcement that she would be travelling to Mumbai despite “receiving threats” from some political parties.

Earlier, India’s aviation regulator had asked IndiGo to take appropriate action against unruly behaviour of passengers.
