Index of 8 core industries mixed bag of boom and slump

New Delhi: The summary of the indices of 8 core industries (base 2004-05) has thrown up a mixed result of increase and decrease in productions.

production in the country increased by 6.1% in December 2015 over December 2014. Its cumulative index from April to December 2015-16 increased by 4.6% over corresponding period of previous year.

production decreased by 4.1% in December 2015 over December 2014. Its cumulative index during April to December 2015-16 decreased by 0.8% over the corresponding period of previous year.

The natural gas production declined by 6.1 % in December 2015. Its cumulative index from April to December 2015-16 declined by 2.7% over the corresponding period of the previous year.

Petroleum refinery production increased by 2.1 % in December 2015. Its cumulative index from April to December 2015-16 increased by 2.4% over the corresponding period of the previous year.

Fertilizer production increased by 13.1 % in December 2015. Its cumulative index from April to December 2015-16 increased by 10.1% over the corresponding period of the previous year.

Steel production declined by 4.4% in December 2015. Its cumulative index from April to December 2015-16 declined by 1.9% over the corresponding period of the previous year.

Cement production (weight: 2.41%) increased by 3.2 % in December 2015. Its cumulative index from April to December 2015-16 increased by 2.2% over the corresponding period of the previous year.

Electricity generation increased by 2.7% in December 2015. Its cumulative index from April to December 2015-16 increased by 4.0 % over the corresponding period of the previous year.

The 8 core industries comprise nearly 38% of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP). The combined index stood at 175.7 in December 2015, which was 0.9% higher compared to the index of December 2014. Its cumulative growth from April to December 2015-16 was 1.9 %.

The data are provisional, based on revised data received for the corresponding month of the previous year in respect of coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery product, steel, cement and electricity. Accordingly, indices for the month December 2014 have been revised.

The index for January 2016 will be released on Monday, 29 February.
