Entertainment Imtiaz, Ekta join hands for film on Laila Majnu

Mumbai: Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali and Ekta Kapoor have joined hands for the film inspired by the Laila-Majnu folklore.

Sharing the first teaser poster of the romantic drama, Ekta wrote, “It’s here the first look teaser recreated. Reimagined. Retold. Proud to collaborate with @imtiazaliofficial to present a classic love story with a contemporary twist.

Here’s the teaser poster for #LailaMajnu.”

She posted a photo with Imtiaz and captioned it, “Guess I have a valentine. Excited to recreate the epic love story, #LailaMajnu with master storyteller @imtiazaliofficial #LailaMajnuOn4thMay.”

The movie, which will launch new faces in the Hindi film industry, will be directed by Imtiaz’s younger brother Sajid Ali.The film will hit the silver screens on 4 May.

Ekta Kapoor has produced numerous soap opera, television series, and movies. Some soap operas she had worked on include Hum Paanch, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, “Kahin Kissi Roz”, Kasautii Zindagii Kay, Pavitra Rishta, Bade Acche Lagte Hain, and Jodha Akbar. Kapoor has also produced the television series Naagin, Ye Hai Mohabbatein, Kumkum Bhagya, Chandrakanta (2017 TV series), Kasam Tere Pyaar Ki and Kundali Bhagya. She has also launched her fashion series with EK Label.

She ventured into Bollywood movie production in 2001 beginning with Kyo Kii… Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta, Kucch To Hai and Krishna Cottage based on supernatural themes followed in 2003 and 2004. Kyaa Kool Hai Hum starred her brother Tusshar Kapoor. She then went on to co-produce Shootout at Lokhandwala with Sanjay Gupta. Mission Istanbul and EMI – Liya Hai Toh Chukana Padhega in collaboration with Sunil Shetty followed. In 2010 to 2014 she released a number of films including Love Sex Aur DhokhaHalf Girlfriend, Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, and Shor in the City.

Imtiaz began his career directing TV programs including Kurukshetra for Zee TV and Imtihaan for Doordarshan. He moved on to Bollywood films. In 2005, he made his directorial debut with Socha Na Tha starring Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia.

His second film, Jab We Met, starred then real-life couple Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor and became his first box office success. His next film, Love Aaj Kal starred Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone and emerged as his biggest commercial success to date. Ali’s next film Rockstar, starring Ranbir Kapoor, did well at the box office despite mixed reviews.

Ali founded his film production company, Window Seat Films; whose first release was Highway. Starring Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt, the film was well appreciated by critics. His next production film, Tamasha, starred Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles and was released to mixed reviews in 2015.

His next directorial venture Jab Harry Met Sejal, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma in lead roles, was released in August 2017. The film released to negative reviews.
