Raipur — Piyush Goyal, Minister of State, (IC) for Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy, inaugurated the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) at Naya Raipur, Chhattisgarh today. Speaking on the occasion, the minister said the state-of-the-art IIIT would be a catalyst in attracting the scientific talents from the entire country.
The new education centre is expected to be comparable with European institutes with smart classroom well equipped labs and gigabit internet connectivity.
The concept of IIIT has been inspired by Bellur math founded by Swami Vivekananda, the minister said. He stated that an innovation lab set up in the institute would serve as a research centre for innovation of fuel technologies, reducing wastage of water, pollution control. It is expected to be a source of job creation.
The minister also announced that NTPC would contribute 20 crore for upgrade of engineering college in Bilaspur and one crore for trauma centre built in Korba. He was in Chhattisgarh also to review the power situation in the State.
Dr Raman Singh, Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, declared this as a historic day as the institute has placed the State in the category of international level institutes. Prem Prakash Pandey, Minister of Revenue & Disaster Management Rehabilitation, Higher Education, Technical Education, Manpower, Planning, Science & Technology, Chhattisgarh, said that the institute would not only be of information technology but would also cater to SMAC social media and mobility, artificial intelligence and automation, cloud computing, analytics, cyber security and medical systems. Arup Roy Chowdhury, Chairman and Managing Director, NTPC Limited, was present on the occasion.
The IIIT has been established at the cost of Rs 200 crore by NTPC as part of the CSR initiative in the area of education The IIIT campus is spread over 50 acres land situated in Naya Raipur. In the first phase of 25 acres, has various Infra structure facilities to give the best to the students.
The academic session will start from 10 August. Exemplifying socialistic model of education, the first batch of 80 students will get a fee waiver in the first year academic year after which in the following years 100% fee waiver for 50% of all the students for the second year and subsequent years, 33% of all the students for the third year and 25% in the fourth year. After the Institute completes four years in 2109-20, 25% students from all the batches will be given 100 % tuition fee waivers.
