Ending the real story behind the media advertisement of an eminent case of love jihad, a family court in Jaipur granted divorce to IAS officers Tina Dabi and Athar Khan on 10 August. Both had filed the application for divorce before the court in November last year with mutual consent. The application was filed just two years after the two got married.
Their relationship had apparently started at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy for Administration in Mussoorie and the subsequent wedding grabbed the attention of the woke media. Dabi had ranked first in the UPSC examinations while Khan had ranked second in 2015.
Vice president M Venkaiah Naidu, then Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and many union ministers were among those who had attended their wedding reception in Delhi.
Many iftar-party brand politicians hailed their wedding was hailed as a symbol of communal harmony.
Both Dabi and Athar were assigned the Rajasthan cadre of the IAS. Initially, both of them were in the same city, but Tina Dabi was later posted in Sri Ganganagar as the chief executive officer of the zila parishad. Athar was posted in Jaipur as the CEO of that district’s parishad.
In November last year, Dabi had joined as the joint secretary (finance) of the government of Rajasthan. She had announced it on Twitter.
A graduate in political science from Delhi’s Lady Shri Ram College, Dabi completed her schooling at the Convent of Jesus & Mary. Athar, meanwhile, was undergoing training at the Indian Railways Institute of Transport and Management in Lucknow when he appeared for the examination in 2015. This was the Anantnag resident’s second attempt.
Athar Khan is on deputation with the Jammu and Kashmir government now and is posted in Srinagar. Tina Dabi shot to fame after she became the first member of the Scheduled Caste to top the prestigious civil services exam, that too in the first attempt.
The interfaith wedding received a mixed response. It was celebrated in media headlines while many social media users pooh-poohed the match-making at a time the country was caught in a debate on communal discord and love jihad. But Dabi had said she was not affected by the uproar, that her marriage was above religious divides. That did not take too long to unravel, did it?
