IAF chief on helicopter crash that killed Gen Rawat: VVIP protocol for flights may change

IAF head Air Chief Marshal assured of a 'very fair process' in the inquiry into the death of CDS Gen Bipin Rawat and 12 others in a chopper crash in Tamil Nadu

Indian Air Force (IAF) chief VR Chaudhari said today, amid the ongoing investigation of the crash that claimed the lives of India’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Bipin Rawat and 12 others, that the VVIP protocol that is followed for flights would be revised and reviewed. However, the final decision will be taken based on what comes out in the inquiry, he said.

The air chief marshal, sharing some insights into the probe, also expressed his “heartfelt grief and sorrow” for the death of Gen Rawat. He assured of a “very fair process” in the court of inquiry.

He spoke also of the steps taken since the tragic accident.

I wouldn’t like to pre-empt any findings of the court of inquiry as it’s a thorough process. It’s a mandate to investigate every single angle and look into every single aspect of what could’ve gone wrong and come out with suitable recommendations and findings. Let me assure you that it is a very very fair process, this entire Court of Inquiry,” added IAF chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari.

Speaking at an event in Telangana on the occasion of the Combined Graduation Parade (CGP), the air chief marshal said that India was thankful to France for the prompt supply of Rafale aircraft.

You know that contract was for 36 aircraft, 32 of which have been delivered. Out of the remaining four, three will arrive on time in February.

The air chief marshal said while the standoff between India and China was continuing, disengagement has taken place in certain areas in Ladakh, falling short of complete disengagement.

The air force will continue to maintain deployment. We are prepared to take on any challenge that we may face in that area

“China has deployed in considerable numbers all across eastern and northern front right up to our eastern command…,” Indian Army chief Gen MM Naravane had said in October.

The CGP, Autumn Term 2021, was conducted at the Air Force Academy, Dundigal, Telangana, in the presence of IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari. The ceremony marks the successful completion of Flight Cadets’ pre-commissioning training from various branches of the IAF.

At the event, reviewing officer and IAF chief VR Chaudhari conferred the President’s Commission to the graduating trainees.
