‘I had received an offer to defame CJI,’ claims lawyer

Lawyer Utsav Bains has posted on social media a story that he was asked to concoct a story of sexual harassment against CJI Ranjan Gogoi, which would force the CJI to resign

New Delhi: A special hearing was held on the issue of the allegation of sexual harassment against Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi in the Supreme Court on Saturday, in which the accused called all the allegations baseless. Now, a lawyer has claimed that some “fixers” had approached him with a bribe to make up a story to defame the CJI.

Lawyer Utsav Bains has posted on social media a story that he was asked to concoct a story of sexual harassment against CJI Ranjan Gogoi, which would force the CJI to resign.

In the post written on Facebook, Bains has claimed that he shooed away the “fixers”, after which he tried to report the matter to the Chief Justice, for which he went to the CJI residence but the latter was not present at home at that time.

Bains said that details of his visit to the CJI quarter can be verified. This story surfaced after the hearing on the case against the CJI on Saturday.

Earlier, during the special hearing in the Supreme Court, CJI Gogoi said that allegations made by a former woman staff of the court were unreliable. He added it was a part of a conspiracy hatched by some major forces to render the CJI office ineffective. Gogoi said he could not stoop even to deny these allegations.

A three-member special bench was set up under the chairmanship of CJI Gogoi after news broke on Saturday that the woman had written a letter to 22 judges of the Supreme Court, accusing Justice Gogoi of sexually exploiting her and punishing her family when she reportedly turned down his advances. The woman has mentioned two incidents of alleged molestation in her affidavit.

The CJI has said that there must be some very powerful force behind this. Following this claim of Chief Justice, lawyer of the Supreme Court Bains has made the sensational claim of conspiracy to defame the CJI.

Ever since, Bains says, he is being hassled by journalists.
