Muslims vandalised motorcycles and shops of Hindus on the day of the Kojagari Lakshmi Puja in West Bengal (yesterday) at Maila Depot, Mominpore, as the state administration, including the police, run by the ruling Trinamool Congress watched as mute bystanders.
BJP leaders shared horrifying images and videos of Muslims rioting in the state, even as the central leadership of the party did nothing more than see its Bengal unit workers tweet scenes of the mayhem.
Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar alleged Hindus were forced to flee after their houses came under attack in Mayurbhanj in Kolkata airport. “Police is silently watching. There is no law and order. The situation is serious but CM Mamata Banerjee is watching Hindus suffer,” he wrote on Twitter. His accusation is supported by videos of empty, ransacked houses in the area.
Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal assembly Suvendu Adhikari shared a video from an area under the Ekbalpur police station's jurisdiction where hoodlums forced the cops to flee, with the mob seen waving Islamic flags.
Twitter user Syed Ishtiyaque Alam blamed Ghulam Asraf (Phoenix group owner), Rehan Khan (son-in-law of a Trinamool Congress councillor) and Shahbaz Alam (a close aide of ruling party leader Firhad Hakim) for the Mominpore anti-Hindu violence. “When we were peacefully celebrating our festival (Milad-ul-Nabi), these 3 people had a secret meeting in a bungalow opposite of Ekbalpur police station. Shahbaz gathered his followers to create a scene inside the police station,” he said.
BJP's IT cell head Amit Malviya shared a video on Twitter showing Muslims vandalising a Puja pandal. “On Sharad Purnima, when Bengali Hindus celebrate Kojagari Lakshmi Puja, Mominpura, a suburb of Kolkata, is witnessing communal violence. Kolkata police abandoned the Ekbalpore police station, perhaps on the orders of Home Minister Mamata Banerjee, while Islamists were on a rampage,” he tweeted.
Adhikari wrote to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, seeking urgent deployment of central forces. “I am compelled to write this letter to you at this hour because the gravity of the situation has prompted this urgency. The Hindu community has come under attack in the Khidirpore Mominpur area of Kolkata on the eve of Lakshmi Puja,” the BJP leader informed Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Suvendu Adhikari wrote in the letter, “Hooligans and anti-socials have vandalised many shops and bikes belonging to Hindus.” He said that the current state of violence against Hindus in Mominpore was reminiscent of past attacks in Howrah, Nadia and Murshidabad districts.
“The State Government has already meekly surrendered in front of the wrath of the goons, who have taken over the Ekbalpur Police Station. If morning shows the day, then the day definitely is gloomy,” the Nandigram leader wrote.
Highlighting the failures of the Mamata Banerjee government in maintaining law and order, Adhikari urged the MHA to intervene and deploy Central Armed Police Forces in the state. “Kindly act on the situation as soon as possible so that the peace-loving Hindu community is protected, especially those who live in locations where they are in minority as per the demography of the area,” he pleaded.
Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit suggested that president's rule was the only solution to the massacre of Hindus in West Bengal, sharing the following video:
On the previous occasion of a similar attack on Hindus by Muslims, the not-so-minority community demanded harsher punishment to suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her comments on Mohammed, Islam's prophet, in Howrah, disregarding Chief Minister Banerjee’s appeal to protest in Delhi and on in the state. Arsonists ran amok in the presence of police.
Of course, that was not limited to Bengal. Muslims in several parts of the country rioted on 10 June on the Nupur Sharma issue. Clashes between the police and the so-called protesters broke out repeatedly at Panchla Bazar in Howrah on 11 June.
But Muslims attacking Hindus has been a regular fare in West Bengal since the 1946 Noakhali riots in undivided Bengal. The butchering resumed after the Direct Action Day a few years after the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress came to power. In 2016, for example, Muslims attacked Hindus in Dhulagarh, Chandrakona, Murshidabad, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, East Medinipur, West Medinipur, Bardhaman, Malda, Naihati and Katwa between June and December.
