The love story of a Hindu-Muslim couple was terminated brutally with the 22-year-old Hindu man mercilessly beaten to death by his Muslim paramour’s brother and the woman slashing her wrists to attempt suicide in Rajkot city.
The Hindu man in question was Mithun Thakur, who hailed from Bihar and was working in a local factory, while the 18-year-old Muslim woman, Sumiyya Kadivaar, is a local. They were courting for the past few months. They lived in the same neighbourhood in Radha Krishna Society on the Jungleshwar main road.
On 9 May, Thakur called Sumiyya on her mobile phone at 10 in the morning but her brother Saakir answered the call. He threatened Thakur of dire consequences and there was a heated altercation between the two.
Saakir, with three accomplices yet to be identified by the police, then went to Thakur’s house and brutally beat him up. A neighbour saw the Hindu labourer lying unconscious in the house and rushed him to Rajkot Civil Hospital from where he was referred to Ahmedabad due to critical injuries and brain hemorrhage. Thakur succumbed in Ahmedabad Civil Hospital on 10 May.
When Sumiyya got to know about his death on 11 May, she attempted suicide by slashing her wrists. The incident became news after she was hospitalised.
Sumiyaa’s parents are divorced. Her mother works in a private company as a labourer. Thakur and his father Bipiin lived in Rajkot and worked in a factory too.
LL Chavda, the Bhaktinagar police station inspector, said, “We have taken the complaint of the victim’s father and rounded up Saakir and one of his accomplices.”
