A BJP MP from Himachal Pradesh, Ram Swaroop Sharma, was found dead at his residence in Delhi today, the police said, adding they are investigating whether it was a case of suicide. Sources said that the MP was found dead in his room. Sharma, 62, had reportedly been unwell for the past few months, they said.
Following news of his death, the BJP cancelled its parliamentary party meeting this morning.
Police officials said that Sharma’s personal assistant had alerted the police control room after the parliamentarian did not respond to his call.
A police team rushed to his house immediately. They forced open the door to Sharma’s room and found him hanging from the ceiling fan.
“He was found hanging inside his room, which was locked from inside. No suicide note has been found,” a police official said.
Police said it looked prima facie a case of suicide. The cops said a staff member of Sharma had informed them that the door to the MP’s room was not opening. Sharma used to live in Gomti Apartments near the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi, which houses several other MPs.
Union Minister of State for Finance and MP from Hamirpur of Himachal Pradesh Anurag Thakur, who has known Sharma since the reign of Prem Kumar Dhumal, rushed to the spot. Sharma was believed to have been close to BJP president JP Nadda and Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Jairam Thakur as well.
Sharma was a two-time MP. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Mandi parliamentary constituency in 2014 and 2019.
Sharma was elected to Lok Sabha from the Mandi constituency in 2016 and again in 2019.

Police reached the hotel where Delkar had allegedly committed suicide. The cops initiated an investigation into the case, the findings of which are yet to be shared in the public domain.
In a statement, the police had said that day that the seven-time MP had likely committed suicide, adding that a note had been recovered.
