Even as the leftist-Muslim combine’s protest against the CAA in the capital Delhi is not relenting, on Thursday, an unknown person opened fire during a demonstration at the Jamia Millia Islamia area. The gunman who fired in the air said, “Come, I’ll give you freedom,” in a clear spoof on the left’s pet “āzādi” slogan.
The gunman came from outside. He waved the pistol, screaming, “Delhi Police Zindabad, Jamia Millia Murdabad. (Long live Delhi Police, to hell with Jamia Millia)”
The gunman had been shouting slogans with a gun in his hand for quite a while. He said, “If you want to live in India, you have to say Vandemataram.” He also cried “Jai Sri Ram” while waving the gun. The police have identified him as a certain Gopal.
A bullet shot a student of Jamia, participating in the demonstration, in the hand. The injured student was rushed to the Holy Family Hospital nearby after being shot at. He was later referred to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. His name is Shadab.
On Thursday, students and teachers of Jamia Millia Islamia planned a march from their campus to Rajghat in protest against the CAA. The shooting incident notwithstanding, Jamia students are going ahead with their programme. Police have been deployed along the route of the march.
Delhi Police has arrested Gopal who had opened fire and recovered a pistol from him. Police say they are investigating the matter and questioning the youth.
Both CCTV footage and amateur photographs shot using smartphones captured his frame. In the video, the man can be seen taking a pistol out and firing.
Protesting against the NRC, a large number of people from Jamia Nagar, Shaheen Bagh, Okhla, Noor Nagar and other Muslim neighbourhoods and ghettos, are taking part in this march. Many of them have been seen squatting at Shaheen Bagh.
Some of these people ransacked and damaged properties of residents of Sukhdev Vihar and New Friends Colony in December 2019 after the parliament passed the bill for amending the 1955 citizenship law.
Given the experience of the last time, the police suspect that there may be a ruckus during March. Therefore, a large number of policemen have been deployed at various places.
Police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel are deployed in large numbers from Jamia Millia to Sukhdev Vihar, Holi Family Hospital, Surya Hotel, Mathura Road, Modi Mill Flyover etc. The traffic in the entire area is disturbed.
