Govt to release ‘chana’ to increase pulse availability

New Delhi: In the meeting of the inter-ministerial committee on prices held here today under the chairmanship of Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, Hem Pande, it was decided that, besides offering chana (chickpea) to State governments, a significant quantity will be released immediately through the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Limited (NCDEX) to cool down prices.

The meeting also suggested exploring the possibility of using Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) outlets for distribution of pulses besides network.

The committee was informed that the Department of Consumer Affairs was working on modalities with the Department of Post to start distribution of pulses through its network at the earliest.

The subsidized pulses are already being distributed through Kendriya Bhandars, Safal and NCCF in and the NCR. The NCCF is also selling pulses in some other metros.
