Politicians in the US have demanded the resignation of Director-General of World Health Organisation (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus over the agency’s belated response to the coronavirus pandemic. There is increasing pressure on the WHO for the Chinese chicanery, in which the WHO and its head appeared to be complicit.
On his return from the China tour, Ghebreyesus had hailed Beijing for the “speed with which (it) detected the outbreak” and its “commitment to transparency”. And then the WHO declared it as a global pandemic at least a month after the spread of the disease had gone out of control of governments across the West.
In February when 17,238 infections had occurred in China and 361 people had died, Ghebreyesus had said that there was no need to stop travel. Around the same time, the WHO had tweeted that the virus did not transmit from one human to another.
The number of coronavirus infections and deaths due to the disease (COVID) in the world is still rising at an alarming rate. India, thanks to the bioterrorist-like behaviour of Tablighi Jamaat associates, is witnessing a doubling rate close to that of Spain.
American politicians are questioning the WHO chief for trusting China’s communist government on the coronavirus issue. Experts in many western countries say that China did not present the correct data regarding the infection of coronavirus.
US Republican Senator Martha McSally said that the WHO chief should resign for China’s cover-up. She said that Ghebreyesus was guilty to some extent also for not keeping transparency from China.
The WHO chief is 55 years old. He hails from Ethiopia. Senator McSally said Ghebreyesus had “cheated” the world. Not only that, Tedros also praised China’s ‘transparency’ about the coronavirus response.
McSally said that she never trusted any communist and that the Chinese government had hidden the virus that originated in Wuhan and that had resulted in unnecessary deaths in the US and the world. Therefore, she said, Tedros should resign. “I’ve never trusted a communist. And their cover-up of this virus that originated with them has caused unnecessary deaths around America and around the world,” said McSally.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump and several other American lawmakers had called Ghebreyesus ‘partial’ who “sided with China”.
Last week, senior British government minister Michael Gove had told the BBC, “Some of the reporting from China was not clear about the scale, the nature, the infectiousness of the virus.”
Early March, a worldwide petition calling for the resignation of WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had garnered more than 4,50,000 signatures in a day. “On 23 January, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declined to declare China’s virus outbreak as a global health emergency,” the petitioner said. “As we all know, the new coronavirus is not treatable at the moment, and the numbers of infected and deaths have risen more than 10 times within only five days.”
At the turn of the month, the signatories rose in number to more than 7,00,000.
