Mumbai: A major fire broke out on the 33rd floor of Beaumonde Towers, a residential complex at Prabhadeviin South Mumbai on Wednesday afternoon. However, no casualties have been reported yet. Around 90 residents were safely evacuated from the building in which Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone owns an apartment.

Deepika was not inside the building when the blaze started, according to fire department officials.

“Our staff and fire brigade is on the spot for assistance. They are trying their best to douse the fire and provide necessary help to people there,” Mumbai Police posted on Twitter.

According to officials, the fire was seen around 2:10 PM on the uppermost floors of the building. Soon, thick black clouds of smoke were billowing out.

Six fire engines and five water tankers are at the spot. This is the third major fire to have broken out in Mumbai in the past week. A medical team along with an ambulance are also present at the spot to meet any emergency.

The authorities have characterised the fire as a ‘Level-III’ one, said. 10 fire tenders, two quick response vehicles, five water tankers, and two ambulances present at the site which is located on Appasaheb Marathe Marg.

Mumbai Police tweeted saying its staff, as well as the fire brigade, is on the spot for assistance.

“They are trying their best to douse the fire and provide necessary help to people there,” it added.

According to reports, the fire has now spread to the left side and the rear end of the tower. The top five floors are now engulfed in smoke. Rescue operations have been halted as the firefighters are struggling to reach the height.

This is not the first instance of a fire catastrophe. According to the report, around 29,140 fire incidents have been reported in the city from 2012 to date. In these incidents, 293 people have lost their lives, while 925 have been injured. One of the most devastating fires occurred last year at the city’s Kamala Mills locality on 29 December. The fire that originated in a pub led to the death of 14 people. The incident brought fire-safety violations rampant in the city under the scanner.
