Father of NCB officer Wankhede responds to Nawab Malik’s jibe

Sameer Wankhede's father was responding to an allegation by NCP leader and Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik that the officer is a Muslim

Sameer Wankhede’s father, a retired senior police inspector, said, “My name is Dnyandev Wankhede and it was the same in school, college, NCC and in the [police] department. In Marathi, it is pronounced as Dnyandev while in Hindi it is pronounced as Gyandev. I have no relation with the name Dawood and I don’t know how they have prepared this forged document. The allegations levelled are all false”.

Earlier, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Nawab Malik had tweeted what he said was a copy of the birth certificate of Narcotics Control Bureau zonal director Sameer Wankhede. The copy states that his father’s name is ‘Dawood’ and that his religious identity is Muslim.

Nawab Malik went on to imply that Sameer Wankhede had claimed to be and forged his caste certificate in order to be selected in the civil services under the category reserved for people from Scheduled Castes.

Nawab Malik has been hitting out at Sameer Wankhede since the  of ’s son Aryan in the Mumbai cruise drugs case on 3 October.

Meanwhile, Sameer Wankhede’s uncle Shankar Wankhede said his brother Dnyandev was called ‘Dawood’ by his neighbours in Mumbai’s Lokhandwala where he used to live.

Asked about Nawab Malik’s tweet, the elder brother of Sameer Wankhede’s father, Shankar, said, “Dnyandev lived in Lokhandwala in Mumbai. It is a Muslim majority area. The people there used to call him Dawood.”

The media has learnt that Sameer Wankhede’s ancestral village is located in the Washim district of Maharashtra. His father studied there and has some land there as well.

After Nawab Malik tweeted the alleged copy of his birth certificate, Sameer Wankhede had issued a statement. He said, “My father is a and my mother late Mrs Zaheeda was a Muslim. I belong to a composite, multi-religious and secular in true Indian tradition and I am proud of my heritage.”

The NCB officer said, “The publishing of my personal documents on Twitter is defamatory in nature and unnecessary invasion of my privacy.”

At present, Sameer Wankhede has gone to Delhi where he will be meeting his superiors in the NCB. An inquiry has been initiated by the agency to look into the bribery allegations levelled by independent witness Prabhakar Sail against Sameer Wankhede in the Mumbai cruise drugs case. Sameer Wankhede will also be attending a scheduled meeting regarding his deputation at the NCB.

In #HongKong, an episode of “The Simpsons” that ridicules #CCP censorship was omitted on Disney+. The archive skips episode 12, where the Simpsons travel to Beijing & criticize the Tiananmen massacre. It's the Communist way: censor, intimidate & destroy.
