Farm reforms rolled back; PM Modi asks farmers to end protest

'In the coming parliament session, we will take constitutional measures to repeal these farm laws,' Prime Minister Narendra Modi said

Days ahead of the first anniversary of farmer protests, Prime Minister said the government would repeal the three agricultural reform laws. Addressing the nation on the occasion of Nanak Jayanti, the prime minister appealed to the protesting farmers to call off their agitation and return to their homes following the announcement of his decision to repeal the farm laws.

“Whatever I did, I did for farmers. What I’m doing is for the country. In the coming parliament session, we will take constitutional measures to repeal these farm laws,” the prime minister said.

Thousands of farmers, mostly from Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, have been camping at several Delhi border points since 28 November 2020, demanding a complete repeal of three farm laws and a legal guarantee on minimum support price (MSP) for their crops.

Top points from PM Modi’s speech:

  • Prime Minister Modi said the three farm laws were for the benefit of farmers but “we couldn’t convince a section of farmers despite our best efforts”.
  • PM Modi said the goal of the three farm laws was to empower farmers, especially small farmers. “I have experienced farmers’ difficulties, challenges from very close quarters in my five decades of public life,” the prime minister said.
  • The budget has risen by five times with over Rs 1.25 lakh crore being spent annually, the prime minister said.
  • Prime Minister Modi appealed to the protesting farmers to call off their agitation and return to their homes. “With your blessings, I never left out anything in my hard work. Today I assure you that I’ll now work even harder, so that your dreams, nation’s dreams can be realised,” the prime minister said.
  • In his speech, Prime Minister Modi stressed how government initiatives have led to an increase in agricultural production. “We have strengthened our rural markets. Several schemes have been brought in to help small farmers,” said the prime minister.
  • In his outreach to the farming community, the prime minister said most of the farmers own less than 2 hectares of land. “When I became prime minister in 2014, we (govt) prioritised farmers’ welfare & development…Many people are unaware of this truth that 80/100 are small-scale farmers who have less than two hectares of land and are over 10 crore in population. This piece of land is their survival,” Prime Minister Modi said.
  • Listing out the Centre’s schemes for farmers, the prime minister said, “We worked to provide farmers with seeds at reasonable rates and facilities like micro-irrigation, 22 crore soil health cards. We strengthened Fasal Bima Yojana, brought more farmers under it.”
  • Prime Minister Modi also said the government had decided to implement “ budget natural farming”. “To make MSP more efficient and other issues…a committee will be formed which will comprise, Centre, state representatives, farmers, scientists, economists. Our govt will continue to work for farmers,” the prime minister said.
