Faizabad Railway Junction renamed Ayodhya Cantonment

Soon after changing the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj in 2018, the Yogi government had announced it would change 'Faizabad' to 'Ayodhya'

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today said that he has decided to rename Faizabad Railway Junction as ‘Ayodhya Cantt’ railway station. The Chief Minister’s office shared the information on its handle. “UP CM Shri Yogi Adityanath has decided to rename Faizabad Railway Junction as ‘Ayodhya Cantt’,” said the CMO.

In November 2018, Chief Minister Yogi had announced that Faizabad district will be known as Ayodhya. Three weeks before that, the BJP government in the state had changed the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj. The Yogi government had also renamed Mughalsarai Junction as Pt Deen Dhayal Upadhyay junction.

The Yogi government had renamed the Allahabad Division as Division. The division has four districts — Allahabad, Kaushambi, Pratapgarh and Fatehpur.

There have been demands to change names of other cities as well including Azamgarh to Aryamgarh, Agra to Agravan and to Harigarh etc. Today’s announcement comes months before the assembly polls which will be held early next year.

Nitish will not go the Yogi way

Responding to a similar demand in September, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had said changing the name of Bakhtiyarpur, named after invader Bakhtiyar Khilji who had infamously set the libraries of the ancient Nalanda library on fire, was out of the question.

Kumar had slammed BJP MLA Hari Bhushan Thakur Bachol on 13 September. Bakhtiyarpur is a city located about 50 km from the state capital Patna.

“It is sheer nonsense. Bakhtiyarpur is my birthplace, who will change its name? People keep talking such nonsense about Bakhtiyarpur. That was the reason that Nalanda University in the late 12 century went from our control,” said Kumar, after winding up his public interaction programme ‘Janata Ke Darbaar Mein Mukhyamantri’.

He made the remark in reply to a question from journalists who sought his views on the BJP MLA’s demand to rename Bakhtiyarpur as ‘Nitish Nagar’. Bachol recently told the media in that Bakhtiyarpur should be renamed as ‘Nitish Nagar’. “Since Bakhtiyarpur is the birthplace of the CM, it must be renamed as ‘Nitish Nagar’. Bakhtiyarpur is named after Bakhtiyar Khilji – the military general of Qutb-ud-Din-Aibak – who destroyed the famed Nalanda University. Khilji was a robber, therefore, the name of the city must be changed,” said the BJP MLA.
