On 6 July at 9:42 pm, I had asked for predictions for the FIFA World Cup 2014 final on Facebook. A Facebook user on my friends’ list got all the predictions correct. He is Rohit Mendiratta. A screenshot of his response appears in the image above. On 8 July at 1:15 am, he wrote:

  •
  • Rohit Mendiratta: Germany vs final…
    Reasons:
    1. Brazil to lose in semis : losing Neymar & Silva is a big blow and team has not shown the flair to win the cup.

    2. Dutch to lose in semis : they have all the firepower in the front but lack good defence.. they have only scored on counters till now.. I think will play little defensive and an occasional brilliance from Messi should see them through.
    3. to lose & Germany to win in final : Germany has shown that they are equally good in all departments I.e. forward, midfield, defence & more importantly goal keeping.. They should play with full strength and Di maria’s absence could prove fatal for Argentina against Germany..

    Conclusion:
    Golden ball : Messi
    Golden gloves : Neuer
    Young player :Paul Pogba
    Golden boot : Rodriguez

Other substantive answers, though not wholly prescient or as strikingly accurate, were as follows (a second comment by any respondent has been deleted):

      •
      • Manoj Goel: It will be Germany final….Neymar is too big a loss for brazil to cope and his replacement, Willian, is also injured…plus Germany are too strong a team with superbly experienced players
are chokers and always choke at big moments…messi had an off day against belgium in otherwise a brilliant WC, so he is due for a big performance

    • Sundar Viswanathan: It will be Brazil Argentina. Home court advantage and the fan base being far too sentimental about the sport. Germany was not that impressive although high ranked. Messi shows his coolness despite being a super star who does not draw attention upon himself (unlike few other superstars).

    • Amit Rao: Brazil- final and Brazil will win… just a hunch…

    • Manas Kumar Mohapatra: Heart love to watch Brazil vs final. But Brazil is not playing upto Brazilian standard. Neymar is out of world cup and Thiago Silva suspended for SF. Germans are famous for their fighting sprit. Most probably German will make it to final.
Similarly Argentina have injury problem. Di Maria and Sergio Augero are injured. Holland playing relatively better football. But Argentina have 1 man called Messi.
      Final will Germany vs Argentina.

    • Aumlan Guha: Ger-Ned in final. After that head says Ger heart says Ned.

    • Abhijit Khopkar: Without Neymar Brazil will have a hard time against Germans. Argenita seems in good momenturm to tackle Dutchs.

I hope to see a Germany vs Argentina clash in final and I hope it will be a highly competitive and trat for eyes.

    • Avdhesh Sapru: Germany will be champions in all likelihood. Too much efficiency in defence for the Brazillian and, as evident in their quarter final against France, an ability to attack that rivals the rest in the fray. Once in the finals they’ll prevail because they’re a more efficient all round team than Argentina and mentally much stronger than Netherlands. Naturally, any of the stars of the other 3 teams can undo this calculation in a moment or three of genius – although Germany is most equipped of the lot to dry up passes to extraordinary individuals and/or crowding them out of contention if they receive a pass.

Manoj GoelIt will be Germany Argentina final….Neymar is too big a loss for brazil to cope and his replacement, Willian, is also injured…plus Germany are too strong a team with superbly experienced players
are chokers and always choke at big moments…messi had an off day against belgium in otherwise a brilliant WC, so he is due for a big performance
