Executioner found to hang Nirbhaya case convicts

Chaudhary Charan Singh District Prison Meerut Jail superintendent says the executioner has received the letter from the Lucknow headquarters

An executioner Pawan, a resident of Meerut, has been instructed to be ready to hang the culprits of the Nirbhaya incident. A letter was sent from Lucknow to the district jail administration of Meerut on Thursday night. The letter contained the message that the Ministry of Home Affairs and Tihar Jail administration had given the relevant information to senior officers of Lucknow Jail and police.

Chaudhary Charan Singh District Prison Meerut Jail Superintendent BD Pandey says that the executioner has received the letter from the Lucknow headquarters. It states that the executioner can be summoned as and when required if he is ordered to hang the culprits of the Nirbhaya incident in Delhi. Hangman Pawan has been asked to be ready.

Meerut jail administration has been asked to get in touch with the executioner. On getting instructions from the government, the jail administration contacted the hangman and asked him to reach the jail on Friday.

UP has more than one executioner

The Tihar Jail administration has asked Uttar Pradesh to provide two executioners. There are reports that the four convicts in the Nirbhaya rape case may be hanged soon. Uttar Pradesh’s Additional Director General (Jail) Anand Kumar said on Thursday that his department was ready to provide an executioner or two to the Tihar Jail administration.

The Tihar Jail does not have any executioner at this point. Kumar said that the Tihar Jail was aware that Uttar Pradesh has two executioners who can complete the hanging process. The Uttar Pradesh administration received a request in this regard from the Tihar Jail on 9 December.

In the meantime, Vinay Sharma, one of the convicts in the Nirbhaya case on death row, has withdrawn his clemency petition. Akshay Thakur’s plea in the Supreme Court where he argued that he need not be hanged because the court has identified Delhi as a “gas chamber”, which will kill him anyway, is likely to be dismissed as frivolous.

All the convicts have been confined to Cell No. 2 of Tihar Jail. Their movements are being monitored using six CCTV cameras so that they do not suffer a nervous breakdown and try to end their lives before they can be executed. Reportedly, they fear being killed in a staged encounter after learning from the media of the Hyderabad case.
