The Navi Mumbai Police has arrested a 32-year-old mechanical engineer suspected to have sexually assaulted at least 12 women. The suspect, identified as Mahesh alias Karan Gupta, was arrested from Mumbai’s Malad area on 7 June.
The police had been looking for the suspect for the last four months.
The engineer created several fake profiles on matrimonial websites to lure “highly educated women”, according to police officials. After getting in touch with women via such websites, he would contact them on their phones and fix a meeting at a pub, restaurant or mall.
Deputy commissioner of police Suresh Mengade said that the engineer would sexually assault women during these meetings.
“The suspect used a different mobile number for every crime. He changed his SIM every time. Even to book cab rides using Ola or Uber, he would use different SIM cards and not the phone number registered in his name. He worked as a hacker some time ago and has good knowledge of computers. But he was using it in the wrong place,” Suresh Mengade said.
The suspect, according to the police, studied at a reputed institute and has worked for big companies in the past.
“Until now, we have information that he committed this crime against 12 women but there seem to be many more. The accused was produced before the court and has been remanded to four days of police custody,” stated DCP Mengade.
In the video clip, the grandchildren of the accused man were seen urging him not to beat his wife.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim, the police arrested the accused on Monday and booked him under Indian Penal Code Sections 323, 324 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation).
The Hill Line police station in Ulhasnagar has arrested the 85-year-old man for assaulting his 80-year-old wife. Police officials identified the man as Gajanan Chikankar of Dwarli village in Ambernath taluka under the jurisdiction of Hill Line police station.
