The police in Assam‘s Guwahati on Friday night busted a rave party near Don Bosco Institute and arrested 18 people. The officials also recovered different kinds of drugs such as cocaine and weed from the party in the Kharguli area of the city.
The party was organised on the third floor of Kharguli Riviera Apartments — the residence of businessman Vikash Jain. The police said that the accused claimed they had gathered to celebrate the birthday of Amit Baruah.
This is the first time in the search operations conducted by Assam Police in its clampdown on drug peddlers that it has recovered cocaine, a relatively expensive drug in comparison to cannabis or heroin, from Guwahati, a cop said.
A case has been registered at the Latasil Police Station, the police said, adding that the party guests belonged to affluent families.
Assam Police has released the names of those arrested, which are Vikash Jain (55 years), Nassif Ahmed (53), Sumit Kumar Beria (45 ), Chayan Saikia (32), Amit Pegu (39), Amit Baruah (45), Ashok Barman (35), Hirendra Sinha (38), Ridib Baruah (42), Siddartha Barthakur (29), Bonamallika Choudhury (45), Rakesh Bargohain (46), Debajani Hazarika (34), Jubee Baruah (39), Nayanika Baruah (45), Debarshi Beria (45), Nimisha Bhuyan (35) and Pankaj Kakoty (47).
In a Twitter post on Friday night, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Guwahati Police was raiding a drugs party at Kharguli. “Fights against drugs continue — Guwahati Police is now raiding a drugs party at Kharghuli. (The) operation is on. Cocaine and different types of weed (ganja)” have been recovered, he said.
The chief minister said banned drugs are being seized every day and recently a consignment of around 2 kg of heroin worth Rs 3 crore in the international market was seized in Karbi Anglong.
Police Commissioner of Guwahati Harmeet Singh said, “Led by our chief minister, Assam Police has been involved in a war against drugs for the past couple of months. Last evening we got a tip-off about a high-end drug party… Cocaine was used. It involved people of high class.”
Cocaine, opium and weed were found from the party, the police chief added.
On Friday, personnel of Assam Rifles and customs department raided Ruantlang village close to the India-Myanmar border in Mizoram’s Champhai district and seized 250 gm of heroin worth Rs 1 crore.
